First Round to Patrick Rothfuss, Who Knew Being a Children's Book Writer Was So Fraught with Peril

It's no secret Patrick Rothfuss and I are both from Wisconsin or that we knew each other as "kids" or that I live in Washington state where Rothfuss did his graduate studies. What's not so well known are the lengths Rothfuss and persons associated with him have gone to to try to push my fantasy novels down while propping Rothfuss's up.

Fifteen years into this, I can hardly believe it's still going on. That every day Rothfuss Adjacent persons "work" the search engines to ensure the anti-Stanek sites and pages they created appear high in the search results on Google, Yahoo, beyond then subsequently prop up their pro-Rothfuss sites and pages. That every day these persons do similar work to push down my status while pushing up Rothfuss. As a computer expert with over 20 years as one of the world's leading technologists, it's easy enough to see this handiwork and identify the sources.

It's almost as if it's these persons' full time job--because it pretty much is and has been since at least 2007. Since Rothfuss got friends to take down the Robert Stanek wiki page and post a full ready-to-go Rothfuss wiki page on 8 May 2007. I guess when you have friends who are Wiki editors and fantasy bloggers you, your brother, your "wife", can do whatever you want to whomever you want without fear of repurcussion.

I guess if your book was a book written for adults that had special appeal to young adults (the Alex awards criteria) you'd be glad if your book wasn't one that could have possibly competed against Rothfuss in 2008. If your  book had, you might have been the one on the receiving end instead of me (or alongside me). Things with Rothfuss kind of go llike that. My first fantasy work was published in 2002--the year Rothfuss won his writers of the future award, the L Ron Hubard contest, meanwhile Rothfuss spent the next four years trying to get published while my Keeper Martin (adult) and Kingdoms and the Elves (YA versions of the same) books climbed the bestseller charts. Amazon SciFi/Fantasy Top 50, 26 weeks, Audible #1 Fiction, 12 weeks. Audible #1 Kids & YA, 20 weeks. Audible Kids & YA Top 10, 180 weeks.

That had to kind of really suck for Patrick Rothfuss (and those close to him who were eager for his success). But unlike normal people who would have focused on something positive, these folks focused on lashing out at those who were doing and achieving what Rothfuss couldn't at the time. Then instead of moving on when Rothfuss finally got his work published, they continued to lash out. Like when Rothfuss/Adjacents told friends/fans/followers in an official entry in the Rothfuss blog and then in an official entry on the Rothfuss facebook page that I was a self-published fraud and asked them to trash my books and flood my book review pages with negative reviews.

Odd considering I had been a successful, bestselling author since 1995. Odd because I had over 100 books to my credit at the time. Odder still because not only had those many, many books been read by millions but they were also published/distributed by some of the most highly regarded publishers of the day: Macmillan, Pearson, Random House, Simon & Schuster, Time Warner and others.

In the age of Trump, Rothfuss's kind of fake news might not have taken on a life of its own. But a decade ago when this kind of news came from an otherwise trusted source like Patrick Rothfuss, people listened and didn't question or bother to check the facts.

With GRRM and JK Rowling becoming  billionaires, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why so much time and effort has been spent to harm fun, family-friendly books like "Keeper Martin's Tale" and "Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches". All I can do is urge you to read the  books for yourself and decide whether they are for you. Read the books if for no other reason that certain parties have spent thousands of hours trying to get you not to.

Thanks for reading, I’m William Robert Stanek, Microsoft’s #1 author for nearly 20 years, and author of over 250 topselling books.

Ruin Mist Turning 15 Soon: 15th Anniversary Ahead.

The 15th anniversary of Ruin Mist is fast approaching. It was on August 7, 2001, that the first installment of Keeper Martin’s Tale as a serialized novel was released in e-book format through Ingram Digital, with the full-length novel arriving in print on January 9, 2002. For 26 consecutive weeks after release, Keeper Martin’s Tale was a Top 50 SciFi & Fantasy at Amazon. Keeper Martin’s Tale was followed by Elf Queen’s Quest, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor, and Mark of the Dragon.

In February 2002, illustrated children’s editions of the books were released as The Kingdoms  & the Elves of the Reaches. With The Kingdoms  & the Elves of the Reaches #1, #2, #3 and #4 quickly becoming children’s / YA top sellers. When The Kingdoms  & the Elves of the Reaches books were released on Audible.com in 2005, the first book became  a #1 Fiction bestseller. After 14 weeks a top the fiction list, it became one of Audible’s all-time top grossing audiobooks to that date with The Kingdoms & the Elves of the Reaches #2, #3 and #4 also becoming bestsellers in Fiction and Kids & YA. 180 weeks later The Kingdoms  & the Elves of the Reaches books were still topping Audible’s Kids & YA Top 10.

Ruin Mist Movie Option Expires. 6th Time Wasn’t the Lucky Charm After All.

Well, Ruin Mist fans, I’m terribly disappointed to say the movie option expired today. As principle filming has not begun, it means the 6th time wasn’t the lucky charm for Ruin Mist after all. Those who have been following along know I’ve been in this crazy business for a few decades now, and am not quite ready to give up the Hollywood dream just yet. The silver lining, as ever: I get to keep the option money. This is, of course, an update from my post from way back in October 2012.

Still, like I said back then, you know you’re doing something right when Hollywood comes knocking six times in a row. Way back in 2002, the first two times Hollywood came knocking, I was  awestruck. Now I’m fine with whatever may and may not happen, so no more dancing on clouds. :-(

BTW, this most recent flirt with Hollywood was thanks to the Ruin Mist prequel and the Ruin Mist graphic novel.

If you’re new to the world of Ruin Mist, books set in the world include:

Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches #1, 2, 3, 4:
Winds of Change
Seeds of Dissent
Pawn of Dragons
Tower of Destiny

In the Service of Dragons #1, 2, 3, 4:
A Clash of Heroes
A Dance of Swords
A Storm of Shields
A Reign of Dragons

Guardians of the Dragon Realms #1, 2:
The Dragon, the Wizard & the Great Door
A Legacy of Dragons

Dragons of the Hundred Worlds #1, 2:
Breath of Fire
Living Fire

A Daughter of Kings #1, 2, 3, 4:
Betrayal
Deliverance
Rebirth
Discord

Magic Lands #1, #2
Journey Beyond
Into the Stone Land

As ever, thanks for reading,

Robert Stanek

My 150th book just published, Ruin Mist readership rockets past 1 million, and Bugville Critters bound for the small screen. Read on...

When I began writing stories so many years ago, I had no idea that I'd be celebrating my 150th book today or that 7.5 million people would have read those books. This long road has included a dozen awards for outstanding writing and excellence from peers, recognition from reader groups and other organizations like the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, features on my books and work in Parenting Magazine, Children's Writer, The Children's Bookshelf, Writer's Digest, The New York Times, Publisher's Weekly, and other fine publications and periodicals.

All those years ago I never dreamed that my books would be so successful and yet they are thanks to readers who have shared their love of my books throughout the more than 50 countries where my books are available, and in dozens of languages. Hope you'll celebrate with me by visiting the new 'Meet Robert Stanek' website @ http://www.robert-stanek.com/  where you can learn about my writing or the new 'Imagined Lands' website @ http://www.imaginedlands.com where you can learn about some of the fantastical worlds I've created over the years.

In other news, it's official: Ruin Mist readership has rocketed past 1,000,000 for the core 'Kingdoms and the Elves,' 'In the Service of Dragons' and 'Ruin Mist Chronicles' books. Readership of the core books has been growing steadily over the years but truly took flight in the past 12 - 18 months, especially with the release of the 10th anniversary editions of 'Kingdoms and the Elves' and 'Keeper Martin's Tale'. For a blast to the ancient past of Ruin Mist, don't miss the new 'Dragons of the Hundred Worlds' novellas.

Bugville Critters is getting some updates too! RP is in the process of releasing fifty--yes 50--2nd Editions of the Bugville Critters books, everything from 'Visit Dad and Mom' to 'Undersea Counting Expedition'. It was a lot of fun to visit the stories again as I worked through the proofs. These high definition (HD) editions release first to libraries and schools throughout North America and then to Apple iBooks. Once these are released, I will be working to bring the first four episodes of the Bugville Critters to the small screen.

Celebrating 35 years, 150 books and nearly 7.5 million readers. It's been a long run and a mostly great one. Join me and learn what it's like to be a writer.

Happy Holidays! You know you're in the right place in life when you wake up every day with a smile on your face. You know you're in the right place as a writer when that smile is because you're eager to get to the keyboard, eager to get the thoughts racing through your mind down on paper.

That eagerness to capture thoughts on paper has carried me through many days, many years, and many books. As a writer, that eagerness has made the blank page a friend rather than a foe. That blank page can be your friend too--if you let it. And if you let it, you can fill it with everything that's inside you, everything that you can wonder about, everything that you can dream about, and everything that you can imagine.

On my blogs, I've written about and featured the books of many authors who weren't afraid of that blank page either--or maybe they were but they figured out how to turn that fear into something magical, if only for a time. That magical thing being a filled page, a page of letters and words. Words that dance and sing. Words that make your heart swoon or soar. Words that make your thoughts chase the heavens or scatter to the winds. Words that make your very breath catch, slow or race.

My day job is as a tech writer, a job I've been doing full-time since 1996. You can learn more about my William Stanek books at http://www.williamstanek.com/. Windows 8 Pocket Consultant is one of my latest tech books.

Before I wrote tech books, I was in the military and I wrote a true account of my war-time service in a book called Stormjammers: The Extraordinary Story of Electronic Warfare in the Gulf War. The book isn't as popular as No Easy Day, but I'd like to think it just as vividly depicts the sacrifices of the men and women I served with in the Gulf War. Learn more about this book at http://stanek.reagentpress.com/.

I started my writing journey in 1986 when I penned Keeper Martin's Tale, the first Ruin Mist book and my first full-length novel. As an instant, indie bestseller, Keeper Martin's Tale shook trees and rattled cages when it debuted in print in 2002--and it's still shaking trees and rattling cages today. Journey to Ruin Mist by visiting http://www.ruinmistmovie.com/.

Another project I worked on for many years before publication is the tale of a big, little place called Bugville. Originally, I wrote the Bugville stories for my children who delighted in them so much they urged me to publish them for other children to enjoy. Buster's story begins with Visit Dad & Mom At Work, but I think it's more appropriate to share with you one of the the more recent stories. It's called Have a Spooktacular Halloween and it features Buster's friend Lass. Journey to Bugville by visiting http://www.bugvillecritters.com/.

If you decide to read my books, and I hope you do, one thing I hope you take with you afterward is the sense that anything's possible. You can dream. You can achieve dreams. All those years ago when I began writing, I had no idea where my dream would take me and yet I dared to dream because I believed the impossible was entirely possible. And, it is.

When I began writing stories in the 4th grade, I had no idea that 35 years later I'd be celebrating the upcoming publication of my 150th book or that nearly 7.5 million people would have read those books. Yet none of it would have been possible if I hadn't dared to dream. Got a dream? You can dare to dream too. And when that dream comes true give me a shout out. Tell the world Robert Stanek sent you.
