Go Brandon, No Not That Brandon, the Other One, Brandon Sanderson

They ceaselessly trashed Robert Stanek’s books and career for being self-published, now some of same helped Brandon Sanderson raise $20M to self-publish. The irony is not lost on me, nor is the fact that Brandon Sanderson is being praised for operating his own publishing company while some of the same spent years not only trashing Stanek’s career but also ensuring his publishing company couldn’t compete in the marketplace. The two-decades of background on all this abounds here, on readindies.blogspot.com and on Stanek’s sites, go read it.

Stanek and his family (for those who have a conscience, these
are the people whose lives you destroyed)

How dangerous Robert Stanek's ideas must have been, how perilous Robert Stanek's stories to their egos, to have now spent two decades stomping them into the ground. Robert Stanek has said all along they were being paid to do the deeds, and indeed they have been for the past two decades. I guess they believe the deed is done now so they can openly show their true colors. To that we say not so fast, we haven’t forgotten who you are, nor will we, nor will anyone we know. We know who you are and what you’ve done.

And meanwhile, the world of Ruin Mist is not going anywhere. The books remain in print. Readers can continue to enjoy them in editions for adults and children. Kids and teens start with The Kingdoms & The Elves of the Reaches 1 - 4 and then continue on to In the Service of Dragons 1 - 4. Afterward, read Breathe of Fire and Living Fire, the prequels, and The Dragon, The Wizard and The Great Door.

Adults, read Keeper Martin's Tale, Kingdom Alliance, Fields of Honor and Mark of the Dragon. Next, read Dragons of the Hundred Worlds, the prequel to the Ruin Mist Chronicles, and then Guardians of the Dragon Realms.

The graphic novel, A Daughter of Kings, answers many of the behind the scenes questions, as do the companion books, Illustrated Encyclopedia of Ruin Mist, Keeper Martin’s Guide to the Fantastical Beasts and Faerie Peoples of Ruin Mist, The Art of Ruin Mist: Heroes & Villains.

Read the Ruin Mist books if only because these people are so desperate for you not to that they’ve spent TWENTY YEARS and MILLIONS tearing down one of the great writers of our time. If not for you, fine, move on… If you love them though, like we do, tell the world about them and piss off those who think they can do whatever they want to whoever they want without consequences.

Emily, Cathy, Shannon

PS

This post is not about anything Brandon Sanderson has done personally. It is, however, about what those in his orbit have done. Cathy and I are readers of Mr. Sanderson's books. - Emily

Holiday Shopping, Dragons, Independents, Oh My!

I write as William Stanek and Robert Stanek. My story may help you understand writers and independents a little better. As a technology journalist, I've written for PC Magazine, Dr. Dobbs, TechNet Magazine and a variety of other leading magazines. As a technology writer, I've written for Simon & Schuster, Random House, Macmillan, Pearson, Microsoft, O'Reilly and other publishers. My many technical articles and technical books have helped millions of readers learn essential job skills and stay competitive. That's important, especially in these troubling economic times.

While working on the William Stanek books, I also worked on my Robert Stanek books, including the Ruin Mist books, the Magic Lands books, and the Bugville Critters books. The Ruin Mist books have been fairly popular. In the spring of 2002, Keeper Martin's Tale and Elf Queen's Quest became instant bestsellers, spending a combined 26 weeks on the Amazon.com Sci-Fi/Fantasy Top 50 list. The name "Ruin Mist" is the common language translation of an elvish word, which means "the lost ages" which is what ruinmistmovie.com is all about. The stories of Ruin Mist are set in a fictional past of our world.

Ruin Mist has three distinct realms of existence: Over-Earth, Under-Earth, and Middle-Earth. Over-Earth is the home of dragons, titans, and eagle lords, the great peoples of the past. Under-Earth is an otherworldly realm that has blood-red skies, and no sun or moon. Middle-Earth is the home of elves of the reaches and the men of the kingdoms. The history of Ruin Mist is divided into four ages: The First Age - The Age of Titans; The Second Age - The Age of Men, Elves, and Dwarves; The Third Age - The Age of Men and Elves; and The Fourth Age - The Age of Men.

The popularity of the Ruin Mist books built up through the release of the subsequent Ruin Mist books. Readers enjoyed the magical realms, the grand adventures, and the combination of classic fantasy elements with a fresh, highly imaginative approach. In the spring of 2005, the Ruin Mist books were first published in audio and became instant audio bestsellers, spending more than 52 weeks on Audible.com's bestseller lists. The Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches eventually became one of the Top 100 all-time fiction bestsellers on Audible.com and was so popular, it was featured on the Audible.com home page throughout July and August 2005.

In 2005, the Ruin Mist books also were featured in several printed books, including The Ancient Art of Faery Magick, The Complete Idiot's Guide to Elves and Fairies, and Popular Series Fiction for Middle School and Teen Readers (Children's and Young Adult Literature Reference). In 2007, the books were featured and highly recommended by VOYA, the top library journal for youth librarians.

"[A] complex tale...sure to attract fans of graphic novels and classic Tolkien alike....Stanek will likely draw a cult following....This cliffhanger guarantees fans, and those fans will be ready to wield their swords against the Dark Lord in Stanek's next installment." (VOYA)
I've also written an account of my experiences in the Persian Gulf War. That book, Stormjammers, was featured in the Journal of Electronic Defense and highly recommended.
"Hard to put down....It is impossible not to share the relief and pride of the individual crew members when the attack missions they protect exit Iraq safely....Another side of the book lets the reader ride along when Stanek's EC-130H has two engines quit in the war zone." (The Journal of Electronic Defense)

The Bugville Critters have always had a special place in my life. For 15 years, I was satisfied with only the gleeful cheers, laughs and giggles of my children who delighted to hear my tales of Bugville and a little bug called Buster. My children urged me for years to get the books published so other children could read the stories too. Since I started that long journey in 2004, the Bugville Critters books have been featured by Parenting Magazine, written about by the Wall Street Journal, and welcomed by teachers around the U.S. These stories are about life and our world. I wrote the stories to instruct and entertain.

Because the books are independently published, you won't always find them in print in the Big Box stores. Big Box stores don't understand independent books or independent authors (and sadly, you can say the same about most independent bookstores). Sure, Big Box stores may stock "The Elf on the Shelf" at Christmas time, they may stock a few local indies from time to time, but they normally don't otherwise. Fortunately, there are many places you can find my books and the books of other independents, especially online. Further, you have only to ask at the Big Box stores to order my books or any other book that's independently published and they will order the books.

Thank you for reading! When you're out shopping this year, I hope you'll support independents, along with the big boys, too. You can learn more about me at robertstanek.com or at reagentpress.com.

My 150th book just published, Ruin Mist readership rockets past 1 million, and Bugville Critters bound for the small screen. Read on...

When I began writing stories so many years ago, I had no idea that I'd be celebrating my 150th book today or that 7.5 million people would have read those books. This long road has included a dozen awards for outstanding writing and excellence from peers, recognition from reader groups and other organizations like the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge, features on my books and work in Parenting Magazine, Children's Writer, The Children's Bookshelf, Writer's Digest, The New York Times, Publisher's Weekly, and other fine publications and periodicals.

All those years ago I never dreamed that my books would be so successful and yet they are thanks to readers who have shared their love of my books throughout the more than 50 countries where my books are available, and in dozens of languages. Hope you'll celebrate with me by visiting the new 'Meet Robert Stanek' website @ http://www.robert-stanek.com/  where you can learn about my writing or the new 'Imagined Lands' website @ http://www.imaginedlands.com where you can learn about some of the fantastical worlds I've created over the years.

In other news, it's official: Ruin Mist readership has rocketed past 1,000,000 for the core 'Kingdoms and the Elves,' 'In the Service of Dragons' and 'Ruin Mist Chronicles' books. Readership of the core books has been growing steadily over the years but truly took flight in the past 12 - 18 months, especially with the release of the 10th anniversary editions of 'Kingdoms and the Elves' and 'Keeper Martin's Tale'. For a blast to the ancient past of Ruin Mist, don't miss the new 'Dragons of the Hundred Worlds' novellas.

Bugville Critters is getting some updates too! RP is in the process of releasing fifty--yes 50--2nd Editions of the Bugville Critters books, everything from 'Visit Dad and Mom' to 'Undersea Counting Expedition'. It was a lot of fun to visit the stories again as I worked through the proofs. These high definition (HD) editions release first to libraries and schools throughout North America and then to Apple iBooks. Once these are released, I will be working to bring the first four episodes of the Bugville Critters to the small screen.

Celebrating 35 years, 150 books and nearly 7.5 million readers. It's been a long run and a mostly great one. Join me and learn what it's like to be a writer.

Happy Holidays! You know you're in the right place in life when you wake up every day with a smile on your face. You know you're in the right place as a writer when that smile is because you're eager to get to the keyboard, eager to get the thoughts racing through your mind down on paper.

That eagerness to capture thoughts on paper has carried me through many days, many years, and many books. As a writer, that eagerness has made the blank page a friend rather than a foe. That blank page can be your friend too--if you let it. And if you let it, you can fill it with everything that's inside you, everything that you can wonder about, everything that you can dream about, and everything that you can imagine.

On my blogs, I've written about and featured the books of many authors who weren't afraid of that blank page either--or maybe they were but they figured out how to turn that fear into something magical, if only for a time. That magical thing being a filled page, a page of letters and words. Words that dance and sing. Words that make your heart swoon or soar. Words that make your thoughts chase the heavens or scatter to the winds. Words that make your very breath catch, slow or race.

My day job is as a tech writer, a job I've been doing full-time since 1996. You can learn more about my William Stanek books at http://www.williamstanek.com/. Windows 8 Pocket Consultant is one of my latest tech books.

Before I wrote tech books, I was in the military and I wrote a true account of my war-time service in a book called Stormjammers: The Extraordinary Story of Electronic Warfare in the Gulf War. The book isn't as popular as No Easy Day, but I'd like to think it just as vividly depicts the sacrifices of the men and women I served with in the Gulf War. Learn more about this book at http://stanek.reagentpress.com/.

I started my writing journey in 1986 when I penned Keeper Martin's Tale, the first Ruin Mist book and my first full-length novel. As an instant, indie bestseller, Keeper Martin's Tale shook trees and rattled cages when it debuted in print in 2002--and it's still shaking trees and rattling cages today. Journey to Ruin Mist by visiting http://www.ruinmistmovie.com/.

Another project I worked on for many years before publication is the tale of a big, little place called Bugville. Originally, I wrote the Bugville stories for my children who delighted in them so much they urged me to publish them for other children to enjoy. Buster's story begins with Visit Dad & Mom At Work, but I think it's more appropriate to share with you one of the the more recent stories. It's called Have a Spooktacular Halloween and it features Buster's friend Lass. Journey to Bugville by visiting http://www.bugvillecritters.com/.

If you decide to read my books, and I hope you do, one thing I hope you take with you afterward is the sense that anything's possible. You can dream. You can achieve dreams. All those years ago when I began writing, I had no idea where my dream would take me and yet I dared to dream because I believed the impossible was entirely possible. And, it is.

When I began writing stories in the 4th grade, I had no idea that 35 years later I'd be celebrating the upcoming publication of my 150th book or that nearly 7.5 million people would have read those books. Yet none of it would have been possible if I hadn't dared to dream. Got a dream? You can dare to dream too. And when that dream comes true give me a shout out. Tell the world Robert Stanek sent you.

A Quick Update, Summer of Indie, Facebook… Halloween Ahead…

A quick update about print books… Last time Australia and New Zealand, this time Germany and Brazil as RP just signed another distribution deal which will bring my fiction books in print to select bookstores in those countries. So that’s fantastic news as we head into the holidays!
This past summer I featured nearly 100 indies in Summer of Indie. Whether you’re an author or a reader, I hope you’ll stop by the Go Indie - Read Indies blog and see what Summer of Indie was all about. http://ReadIndies.blogspot.com/.

If you're an indie author, you've probably seen me hanging out on Facebook over the past year. If you’re a reader, you’ve probably seen me hanging out on Facebook too. Why? I wanted to see if social media was worth all the fuss. Was it really the future of communication? Could you really connect with anyone in a meaningful way? Does it matter? The short answers: Yes, it could be. Yes, it’s possible. Yes, it matters. The long answers: forthcoming. http://www.facebook.com/RobertStanekAuthor.
Halloween Ahead… Have a Spooktacular Halloween!

Thanks for reading!
Until next time,

700,000 RMC Readers, oh yeah! A Movie script, New Distributors and more so Buster and I celebrated with cookies!

May’s Millionth RMC Reader Event was HUGE fun. The event brought about 50,000 new readers to the Kingdoms, catapulting worldwide Ruin Mist readership to around 700,000. Movie news though is what created the real buzz and suddenly there were over 8,000 people talking about the books on Facebook which was really cool and fun to see, especially after all these years of hard work. For a while there were over 35,000 likes on my Facebook page and then my twitter followers soared over 50,000, so yeah it was FUN! Then in June my publisher added 3 new distribution partners, bringing the total global print and media partnerships to 24. New partners means my books will be available in more places around the world.

I decided to celebrate. Mmm... Cookies for everyone!

Buster liked the cookies, but he likes honey more.

While I was working on the script for "A Daughter of Kings" my wife bought me the perfect mug, so now I drink tea a gallon at a time...

And just for fun, an 11th most read book... :-D

Wondering what other recent news there is for my books? On May 25th, just in time for Memorial Day, Audible released a special edition of my book, Stormjammers: The Extraordinary Story of Electronic Warfare in the Gulf War. My books are now available in select bookstores in Australia and New Zealand.

Bugville News
  • Spanish language editions of the Bugville Critters books are in the works and on track for 2013.
  • Buster's Trouble With Dragons will be released in Fall/Winter 2012.
  • New Bugville Critters audio books will be out Fall/Winter 2012 as well.

Magic Lands News

  • The Wizard's Stronghold (tentative title) is on track for publication in Spring 2013.

Ruin Mist News

  • Working on the script for "A Daughter of Kings" which may become the first Ruin Mist movie, fingers crossed.
  • Two new Ruin Mist: Dawn of the Ages novellas are on track for release in Spring 2013.

Thanks for reading!

Until next time,

A Graphic Novel, A Few Picture Books & A Whole Lot of Fun

Love being indie. Awesome seeing Ruin Mist back at #1 recently, and the new graphic novel is out (http://amzn.to/xZARdp). A few new picture books since my last update too: Pirates Stole My Booty (http://amzn.to/xOGDAF), Mamma Sea Turtle Lost Her Babies (http://amzn.to/w4g5w1), and How Many Fish (http://amzn.to/zUw2Xu).

Buster and friends had a terrific holiday. Dag got a surprise from Santa too, even though he didn’t ask for anything. Dag and Buster had fun recently on vacation together…

After vacation, Buster, up to his usual hijinks, got himself into trouble when he didn't clean his room.

Meanwhile, Dag's Mom learned he was playing video games he wasn't supposed to. Oh no, is that Gears of War, Dag?

Love Valentine's Day? You're not alone. A few thousands readers downloaded my Happy Valentine's Day Screensaver for Windows. The customizable screensaver has 3D hearts, a flower clock, and more. Wallpaper and backgrounds are posted too for iPhone & other smart phones, iPad & other tablets, and computers.

Thanks for reading. Until next time.

Holiday Fun with Bugville, Ruin Mist & Magic Lands

Great year to be indie! Rise of the Fallen (http://amzn.to/tqiBDB) and Into the Stone Land (http://amzn.to/uPkrYa), my latest novels, continue to be popular, especially at libraries. Twelve Dresses, One Star (http://amzn.to/so7zrF) is a new Bugville picture book.

Buster and friends are having a great holiday, and already are thinking about the big celebrations. Dag even started a letter to Santa...

While Buster was experiencing a little Holiday Hijinks of his own...

A few fans thought, this was the ultimate screensaver, though some didn't understand the subtle message hidden in the subtext. I'm sure you do though, right?

Thanks for reading. Until next time.
